Moon Magick 101

With the Full Moon looming over us in Virgo, I thought it would be the perfect time to chat about moon magick. Much of spellwork has always been tied to astrology, especially the moon phases and the signs in which the moon phases fall. The sun is also very powerful for spellwork, but the moon is more closely aligned with the Goddess and the Earth. The moon fascinates many people because of its air of mystery. The fact that it is most visible at night probably adds to the mystery and the beauty. The Moon has connotations for many religions, and the word Moon comes from the Greek word meaning “measure”. For witches and mystics, the moon is a powerful tool for spellwork because of it's reflection of the cycles of life, and because of its apparent control over both human and animal emotion.

There are eight moon phases that make up a complete cycle. The cycle takes about 29 days to complete from full moon to new moon and back. Each phase has specific connotations for spellwork, and for many mystics, for life itself. Many live their lives by the phases of the moon, similar to how our ancestors did when time was still measured by the moon and eventually the sun.

Moon magick is worked based on the moon's phases, however the power of each phase is believed to hover for days. So if you miss the first day of the full moon, for example, you still have two other days to work with its power. Many believe that you have at least three days with each phase.

The Dark Moon is when the moon is not at all visible in the sky. This is a good time for reflection and self-care.

New Moon

The New Moon energies are all about new beginnings, forging new paths, taking on new projects, and is full of inspiration and creative energy. The soil is rich, so start planting. It's also a great time to clear your physical spaces of clutter and dust. Kick up any stagnant energies!

Waxing Crescent

As the Moon begins to grow in strength, now is the time to focus on financial and legal matters. The soil is fertile. Work in healing magick, business & communication, and prosperity magick. This is also a great time to work on and think about pregnancy & fertility.

Waxing Gibbous
