Herbal Antiseptic Receipe


Now that you've learned the a basic tincture recipe, it's time to put that knowledge to work! In this post I'll share with you my herbal antiseptic tincture recipe. This antiseptic can be used topically to initially treat minor cuts, scrapes, and wounds. However, if the wound is not healing after a few days, always consult a medical professional. Herbal Ingredients:

Witch Hazel has been used for centuries as a natural astringent derived from the bark and leaves of the witch hazel plant. It has been used by Native Americans to calm swelling, treat burns, bug bits, and small wounds. It also has mild pain reliving properties.

Lemon Balm has antibacterial properties and can help with inflammation.

St. John's Wort is also known for it's anti-inflammatory properties, as well as speeding the healing process of minor scraps and cuts by stimulating circulation of oxygenated blood to those skin cells.

For this tincture, you will need dried lemon balm leaves and st. john's wort root or leaves. You can purchase witch hazel at almost any drug store or pharmacy. So we'll be using store-bought witch hazel extract.

You will also need:

  • 80 proof alcohol
  • a jar
  • a strainer or cheesecloth

Fill a clear jar up 1 part full of your dried herbs, then fill the jar up the rest of the way with 1 part witch hazel and 1 part alcohol.

Secure the lid on the jar and give it a good shake. Store your tincture in a cool, dry place and shake it every day for at least three weeks. You can do this process for a little longer, if you’d like, for up to 6 weeks. After three weeks, you can shake the jar every few days.

When you're satisfied with the length of time the tincture’s had to soak in the properties of the herbs, you will need to strain your tincture. Once you've strained your tincture, store it in a clean glass jar or dropper bottle for use and away from sunlight.

To use this antiseptic, moisten a cotton ball or pad with the tincture and gently dab the effected area. As always, be cautious of allergies!
